Jeju Stone Park is a space that combines the creations of Jeju, the culture of stones that has been a root of Jeju’s people, the myth of Grandmother Solmundae, and the folk culture of the island. Built on the nine hundred and ninety thousand square meter Gotjawal site, this space allows visitors to view the life of Jeju, various stone relics, and the legends of both Grandmother Solmundae, creator of the island, and the Five Hundred Generals. While serving as an educational space that preserves the identity, local features, and artistry of Jeju, Jeju Stone park always puts the environment first.
In that vein, this exhibition was organized with the environmental priorities of Jeju Stone Park at the forefront. At the Five Hundred Generals Gallery, an exhibition space at Jeju Stone Park, Sookyun Yang and Kat Austen display the vegetation of Hallasan in a peculiar way through both video and sound. The subject matter of the work surrounds us, yet it presents a part of Jeju’s nature that feels unfamiliar. Alongside that, Yongho Ji reuses discarded tires, crafting them into the shapes of animals. The outdoor exhibition space features two versions of his Lion work in their aggressive stances, positioned in the middle of the huge stones representing the Five Hundred Generals. In juxtaposition to the imposing look of the stones, the legend of the Five Hundred Generals is a sad story about the loss of one’s mother. The transparent eyes of the Lion artworks show a different side of the beasts, reflecting the theme of the Five Hundred Generals.
