International Peace Center Jeju
In 2005, when Jeju Self-Governing Province was officially named the ‘Island of World Peace’ by the Korean government, International Peace Center Jeju was built in the Jungmun Tourist Complex of Seogwipo City as a symbolic commemoration. Opened in 2006, it serves as a venue for promotion, exhibition, education, and hands-on experiences related to peace. As the center of world peace, Jeju, blessed with its wonderful natural environment and unique island culture, is a space where pride can be cultivated and leaps into the future can be made.
At the Special Exhibition Hall within the International Peace Center Jeju, the works of Yung Cheung and Clara Cheung will be introduced through this exhibition. Their works reflect the chaotic political situation of Hong Kong and their positions within it. Also, in the Special Exhibition Room, Sammy Lee and M. J. Harding present their video installation, an exploration of dynamic waveforms based on Jeju’s Oreums (volcanic cones) and traditional music. Yongho Ji protects the entrance of the facility with his mutant creatures, crafted from discarded tires and looking like they stepped out of a sci-fi movie. The desires for freedom and peace, the mysteries of Jeju’s nature and culture, and the confusion brought on by an uncertain future are all laid out harmoniously here at International Peace Center Jeju.
