클라라 청은 홍콩에서 태어나 예술가이자 독립 큐레이터로 활동했다. 2020-2021년 구의원을 역임하기도 한 그는 종종 예술로 지역의 정치 사회 문제를 비판한다. 2021년 홍콩-중국-공산당 당국의 정치적 위협을 피해 영국으로 건너가 홍콩 해방을 위해 계속 투쟁하고 있다.
하코트 로드 이야기를 수집하는 로팅
클라라 청은 홍콩 정부의 탄압으로 인해 영국으로 이주했다. 영국 셰필드(Sheffield)에서 ‘하코트 로드(Harcourt road)’라는 지역을 발견하게 되는데 홍콩에도 동명인 ‘하코트 로드’가 존재한다. 홍콩이 해방된 제2차 세계대전 종전 후 일본의 항복을 받는 과정에 큰 역할을 한 하코트 제독의 이름을 딴 지명이다. 작가는 두 곳의 차이점을 강조하면서 홍콩과의 연대를 이어가는 프로젝트를 진행한다. 하코트 로드 프로젝트는 블락 프로젝트의 의뢰로 제작했다. 한편, 작가는 홍콩 완짜이구 구의원 재직 시절 유권자와 소통하기 위해 현수막을 이용하기 시작했는데, 이후 현수막의 풍부한 역사와 도상학을 접하면서 그 방식에 매료됐다. 현수막에 등장하는 반인반어는 홍콩의 전설로 전해지는 ‘로팅’이다. 일부 역사가들은 ‘로팅’을 과거 혁명에 실패해 홍콩으로 도망친 사람과 연관시키기도 한다.

전시를 위해 클라라 청이 초대함
이에 더해, 전시에는 익명 홍콩 정치활동가들의 그림 47점을 함께 출품했다. 그림들은 2019년 범죄인 인도법안 반대 시위 당시 폭력적 진압으로 인한 트라우마를 묘사하고 있다. 시위 참여자들에게 치유를 제공할 필요성을 느낀 예술가와 사회복지사 단체는 2020년 무료 스튜디오 <정치 활동가를 위한 예술 행동>을 개최한다. 이러한 활동은 그림을 통해 기억을 공유하며 치료의 측면을 넘어선다. 참여자들은 시위에 대한 시각적 증언으로 더 많은 사람과 만났으면 했다. 현재 홍콩에서는 검열로 인해 예술 활동이 자유롭지 않아 익명 홍콩 정치활동가들의 그림은 국외로 보내졌다. 추방된 기억과 표현들은 홍콩인의 ‘감각 기억’과 ‘집단 기억’을 연결함으로써 홍콩 안팎을 잇는 가교역할을 한다.

Clara Cheung was born in Hong Kong and has worked as an artist, independent curator and served as a district councilor from 2020-2021. Her art often critically responds to social and political issues in the region. In 2021, she relocated to the UK to escape from the political threats by the Hong Kong-Chinese Communist Party (HK-CCP) authorities and continues to fight for the liberation of Hong Kong.
Lo Ting Calling for Harcourt Road Stories
Clara Cheung relocated to England in 2021 due to the oppression of the Hong Kong government. There, she discovered a street called Harcourt Road in Sheffield, which shares the name of a Harcourt Road that also exists in Hong Kong. They were named after two different Harcourts, the one in Hong Kong being named after Admiral Sir Harcourt, the commander-in-chief of Hong Kong who received Japan’s surrender at the end of World War II, the same time Hong Kong was liberated. In pointing out the differences between these two Harcourt Roads, the artist is carrying out a project to continue her solidarity with Hong Kong. Harcourt Road Project is commissioned by Block Project. Also, in England, she remains fascinated by the rich history and iconography of the trade union banners. Through her beginnings using banners to communicate with constituents in her role on the Wan Chai District Council in Hong Kong before 2021, she currently uses banners as her medium to explore the entangled relationship between Hong Kong, her hometown, and their former colonizer Britain. The image featured on the current series of banners is a Lo Ting, a legendary half-human half-fish creature in Hong Kong. Some historians even associate Lo Ting with the people who fled to Hong Kong after a failed revolution in 500-700 AD
Anonymous Political Actors in Hong Kong
Invited by Clara Cheung to join the exhibition
This collection features 47 paintings by Anonymous Political Actors in Hong Kong. They depict the trauma caused by the violent suppression tactics used during the protests against the fugitive extradition bill in 2019. Feeling the need to help heal the wounds of those who participated in the protests, artists and social workers opened a free studio called Art in Action for Political Actors in 2020. Through this project, people were able to share their memories through pictures and go beyond the normal scope of treatment. Participants wished to get their visual testimonies out there, so that more people could see them. Currently, people in Hong Kong are not able to freely make critical art due to censorship laws, so these paintings by the anonymous political activists in Hong Kong are being sent abroad. These deported memories and expressions serve as a bridge to connect the inside of Hong Kong with the world outside of it through these “sensory memories” and “collective memories.”
